What is it all about?
Every year, first grade school children in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern receives a reusable breakfast box, the so-called “Bio-Brotbox”. The food box contains a healthy organic breakfast as well as information to the parents on organic agriculture, food and current health issues. In September 2015 more than 5.000 first-graders in 88 schools were able to enjoy a Bio-Brotbox.
The Bio-Brotbox action is staged annually with an increasing number of participants. Volunteer, broad social alliances such as the “Landaktiv – Verein für ökologische Landwirtschaft, umweltgerechte Fischerei und Gesundheit in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e.V.” organize the action. The organic food ingredients are provided from locally-based private companies in the region.
The Bio-Brotbox action has a number of well-documented effects:
- It leads to increasing awareness in the families, that every child should have a daily breakfast
- Children learn how to recognize the origin of the food they eat
- In general, they learn how to appreciate healthy food
Why it is a Best Practice?
For many children and their parents, the Bio-Brotbox is the first contact with organic food products. With their involvement in the action, numerous companies in the organic food industry and other sectors demonstrate a social commitment in their region. Thus, the food boxes may become part of the CSR policies of the companies.
